Birth Story Photography

I want to start this post off with a very heartfelt thank you to Kristin and David. I want to thank them for allowing me to be there and photograph such a precious and intimate event–the birth of their child David. I was the only person present besides the medical staff and their doula Kate. I can’t even express what a gift it was to be able to have this experience.

I met Kristin and David through our Bradley teacher Lara. They were preparing to have an unmedicated labor (and she did:) and they were taking the same class that my husband and I had taken before we had Ilyse. I attended their class one evening and nervously presented about myself and how I would love to photograph a birth and I was looking for a couple that would be willing to let me document their experience.  I also told them that as a new mom, I know that I would have loved for an artist to photograph these first moments I had with Ilyse.  I wrapped up my little presentation meeting the couples briefly and giving out my card.  A few days later I received a call from Kristin.

Looking back on the documentation of my own birth, I have snapshots that mean the world to me and video taken on our flip video camera that is incredible that my sweet husband took. I cherish these. They bring back the memories of holding her for the first time. Many of my brides tell me they cry when they see their wedding day photographs. Of course, this is because at the core (beyond wanting my clients to look stunning in their portraits;) I am trying to create images that capture moments, movement, what it felt like.  I always say that photos are markers for memories. But, beyond that, it also captures details that one might not recall. Those details that are a part of the main event. I approached this shoot the same way I approach a wedding. To photograph it like a story.

Thank you again to Kristin and David.  You two are really special and I’m so happy for you. Thank you for trusting me with such a big job and additionally for letting me publicly share a selection of images. I hope these will forever take you back to those moments when you met your little boy. And, I’m so happy that little David will have these photos to see the way you looked at him on his birth day.

Thank you also to Lara (Bradley teacher) & Kate (the doula) for being so amazing.

If you’d like either of their info or are interested in having your own birth photographed you can email me at [email protected]
